Caring for a loved one with a disability is a difficult task. For some people, it becomes overwhelming. However, it doesn’t have to be that way. There are some steps you can take to make it easier both on yourself and your loved one.

Reach Out For Support

Many times folks try to go it alone, but this rarely if ever works out. If you live in a large town or city, there are probably support agencies right in your area. Reach out to them and let them know what you are going through.Additional information can be found at http://nsingit.wordpress.com/2011/08/19/subhash-vashisth-delhi-high-court-lawyer-and-founder-of-the-dooars-institute-for-the-disabled-speaks-to-bar-bench/. Most of them are staffed by friendly, compassionate individuals who will go out of their way to help.

Assign Specific Tasks

When able-bodied friends and family offer to help, give them specific tasks. If they haven’t lived with a disabled loved one, they might not know what needs to be done. Help them to help you. Make a list of what would help you the most, whether it be doing laundry, taking your loved one to a doctor’s appointment, or just giving you time away from the house.

Don’t Forget Yourself

Make sure you make time to do the activities you love, whether it be yoga, church or just visiting the library. It will keep you renewed and help you deal with feelings of stress.
